In fact, from his birth until reaching 2, a child experiments a unique developmental stage, during which his health capital takes shape as well as the one of the adult to be. However, buying adequate dairy baby food to nurture their children affects directly low-income households who are the first to suffer as far as their daily budget is concerned : all the nutrition advice they can get are not always adapted to their standard of living and their resources. These difficulties can lead to erratic and risky eating habits: unbalanced diets for pregnant women, a lower breastfeeding rate, inadequate food at an early age(e.g cow milk)

In this context, several partners, among them French Red Cross, Blédina (Danone’s operator in the infant’s nutrition sector) and pediatrician’s unions wanted to implement a joint program co-created with its recipients, the target beneficiaries families, and local partners, with two main aspects :

Provide low-income parents with affordable and nutritious food for 6months infants to 2 years children ; selected Blédina and Gallia products (via vouchers) and affordable fresh fruits and vegetables baskets via local partners

Nutritional advice on the biggest steps of child nutrition and food and health tips for mothers based on clear and adequate messages and elaborated with a network of practitioners at a local level : educational materials and courses are delivered by independent third parties, and many mothers attend educational workshops to develop good nutritional practices.

What is the impact for families?

Reduce the financial burden for the families so that they could focus on other essential living expenses, notably for their professional inclusion (energy bills, vehicle maintenance, child care…etc)

Avoid various dietary deficiencies, stunted growth, risks of infection…etc ; a clinical study will start in 2015 on the program’s impact on the children’s nutritional status

Partnerships and scope

The program is supervised by a joint team Blédina-Danone/Malin

To target the families, several partnerships have been made with local family funds and social security offices to target the benefits recipients

With local structures willing to get involved, which work with families with young children such as childcare facilities, Infantile and Maternal Protection, general practitioners, pediatricians

Families can join the program through local partners via a computerized system . Registration enables them to use the vouchers they get, at the childcare facility office or by post.
They receive 5 registered vouchers, between their children’s 6months and 2 years with a 30% or 40% discount depending on the products (first infant milk, growing up milk, baby food jars, fruit compotes) with a total discount amount of 262 euros. Those vouchers cover 100 per cent of the baby’s milk needs and 33% of a balanced diet.
Partnerships have been made also with registered supermarkets that accept the vouchers as payment options and with a reduction for the applicants.

The Programme Malin scheme offers to low-income families encouragement information and advice on issues such as healthy eating, and child nutrition, with health professionals and local partners who play a key role

Project roll-out and perspectives

Malin is available in an experimental phase in 4 areas in France : Grenoble, Villefranche-sur-Saône, and in the Loire Atlantique and Savoie regions.
For more information, see Programme Malin’s website (in French only)
